Offsetting Existential Despair with Extreme Violence: A Low-Level Psychological Compensation

When structural violence is internalized as numbness, one seeks performative violence to confirm their own existence.

The author compares watching the Saw franchise to meditation or doing planks, attempting to elevate a fascination with gore into a confirmation of the 'will to live.' This is a logical scam. The author admits to lifelong suicidal ideation and feeling benumbed—a numbness that is rarely innate, but rather a defense mechanism after long-term exposure to structural violence or spiritual attrition. When one is stripped of agency in real life and feels a slow death, they require extreme, direct stimuli to pierce through that numbness.

Within the Violence Triangle, this pleasure is a reverse application of cultural violence. Torture porn weaponizes expression by turning violence into a 'game,' using extreme direct violence (cutting, marrow extraction) to create a fake 'survival contrast.' By imagining themselves in the traps, the author recovers a primal, biological fear of death. In this moment, fear becomes a form of 'salvation' because it proves they aren't completely dead yet—they still possess a survival instinct.

However, this is a dangerous loop. Confirming existence through the lens of violence is a low-level compensation for a lost subjectivity. It does nothing to dismantle the actual structural issues causing the despair; it merely provides a brief psychological massage via the spectacle of 'someone having it worse.' It is like watching videos of feasts while starving; it triggers a reaction but provides no nutrition. When the screen goes black, the author returns to the same benumbed reality.

The true optimal expression is not finding motivation in gore, but dismantling the structures that drive one toward suicide. If a person needs to imagine drowning in liquefied pig carcasses to be grateful for being alive, the gap between Potential and Actual in that society has become monstrous. This 'feel-good' sensation is not good news; it is the deepest form of tragedy.
