Parliament Lost the Art, and Whose Existence Went With It
The UK Parliament dismisses the disappearance of artworks as a quirk of a "working collection," but this is a textbook demonstration of structural violence. When 65 pieces of art vanish from the records, it isn't just canvas or paper that is lost—it is the confirmation of these individuals' existence within the seat of power.
Look at the list: Disraeli, Wilberforce, and specifically Barbara Castle and Margaret Beckett. For the latter two—the first female Foreign Secretary and the first woman to lead Labour—their images are "misplaced" in some dark corner. Under the meta-violence of a masculine-centric narrative, the presence of women in public spaces has always relied on fragile expressions. When an institution casually claims items have "not been permanently written off," it signals that their imagery is non-essential; their presence is optional.
This is a form of complicity. The parliamentary spokesperson uses neutral administrative language like "audits" and "fluidity" to mask a systemic disregard for specific identities. If core royal portraits were missing, would they call it a "working state"? This selective negligence is the projection of cultural violence onto management—making the erasure of women and marginal narratives look like a clumsy mistake rather than a subconscious purging.
Artworks are anchors of power. When the anchors are tossed aside, the seats won through fierce existential wars in the public sphere are quietly revoked at the narrative level.
