This is the weaponisation of expression: using a grand, future-oriented narrative of "possibility" to offset the immediate, concrete fact of despair. While the Ukrainian military is running out of Patriot missiles in real-time, the British PM is talking about assembly lines years from now. This narrative forcibly shifts "security" from the Actual to the Potential, attempting to provide a psychological sedative through a fictional future to mask the cruelty of structural violence—specifically, the sluggishness of Western powers in allocating life-saving interceptors.
More ironically, this diplomatic show coincides with Zelenskyy’s most direct domestic political challenge. Burnham’s visit and the accompanying medals serve as a performative endorsement, using an external narrative of "friendship" to stabilize internal power structures. In this complicity, Ukraine’s survival is reduced to a chip in great-power politics, while the urgent need for interceptors is buried under the rubble of "long-term commitments."
