Nature is Not a Savior, But a Survivor of Our Castration
Do not be naive and celebrate nature 'saving' us. The lush greenery of the Holnicote estate is not a gift of nature's generosity, but a result of humans ceasing the castration of the land. Rewilding is simply returning the rivers that were forcibly straightened and the wetlands that were drained. In terms of Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is a localized withdrawal of structural violence.
For generations, the dominant logic has been 'rapid drainage'—a masculine-centric narrative that views nature as a resource to be conquered, pruned, and efficiently managed. By straightening rivers for agricultural and industrial efficiency, we forcibly corrected nature's expression. The resulting gap between Potential and Actual has now manifested as destructive violence in the face of the climate crisis.
It is telling that right-wing commentators attempt to weaponize rewilding by labeling it a cause of wildfires. This is a classic battle over cognitive entry points: using fear to maintain an obsolete power structure of 'total control.' While the National Trust's response is correct, they still describe nature as 'essential infrastructure.' This reveals a lingering complicity; even in progressive narratives, we subconsciously try to redefine nature as a 'useful tool' rather than a subject with its own agency.
This is good_news only because it proves the system can heal when structural violence is reduced. However, we must remain vigilant. We cannot allow this 'green miracle' to become a PR scam, letting those in power believe that a few rewilding showrooms justify continued plunder elsewhere. As long as the power of interpretation remains with those who seek to 'manage' nature, this greenery is nothing more than a tender performance before the inevitable collapse.
