Michael Cohen's Sycophancy: A Cheap Performance of Survival Optimization

When subjectivity is priced by power, 'recanting' is merely the return of a co-conspirator.

Michael Cohen's return to 'Boss' and 'Sir' on the radio is not a dramatic twist, but a low-end gamble in an existential war. From calling Trump a 'conman' in 2019 to rolling out the red carpet in 2026, Cohen has executed a highly efficient identity shift. This shift involves no moral awakening; it is simply the 'Optimal Expression' for his current situation: trading the total death of his subjectivity for a ticket to a presidential pardon.

What we witness here is pure complicity. Trump redefines Cohen by claiming, 'I respect that you recanted everything,' while Cohen seeks a marginal seat in the masculine-centric power structure by playing the 'loyal lapdog.' This relationship is a micro-mirror of meta-violence: the powerful define reality, and the weak survive by aligning with that reality. When Cohen concurs that 'the polls are crooked,' he surrenders not only the right to interpret facts but his very value as an independent being.

Cohen's attempt to compare himself and Trump to Andrew Jackson and Aaron Burr is a laughable weaponised narrative of self-sanctification. He tries to package 'being weaponised by the justice department' as a shared martyrdom to mask his essence as a power appendage. This 'victim complicity' is a common cognitive entry point for the elite: packaging systemic crime as political persecution, allowing traitors to return to the fold under the illusion of being 'misunderstood.'

This is far from the reunion of Caesar and Brutus, because Brutus at least possessed a political logic when he struck. Cohen's current state is simpler: he found that playing a spineless servant is more profitable than being a discarded witness. The most repulsive part of this performance is how it demonstrates that, in the face of power, 'conscience' and 'truth' are rapidly priced and sold for scrap.
