Even more repulsive is the PR spin from Netcompany-INEOS. Director Geraint Thomas discusses 'opportunities' and 'team ability' before mentioning their 'full support' for Josh Tarling's decision to race. This 'support' is a textbook example of complicity: it rapidly drags a traumatized individual back into a masculine-centric narrative driven by commercial contracts, sponsors, and rankings. In this narrative, the only valid 'healing' is returning to the battlefield and using victory to overwrite death. This is not support; it is the erasure of subjectivity.
The CPA union expresses 'fury,' but such emotion is cheap within the commercial machine. Unless safety loopholes are quantified as legal liabilities and the breach is defined as systemic negligence, this fury is merely cultural violence. It performs justice to make the audience feel that 'we are concerned,' allowing them to comfortably watch another capital-driven sporting spectacle just eight days later.
