Steady Success as the Ultimate Rebellion in the Attention Economy
Lambchop's "steadiness" is almost a scam in today's attention-deficit economy. In an era where artists scramble for cognitive entry points by manufacturing foundation-shaking disasters or viral successes, Kurt Wagner chooses a nearly masochistic modesty: a stream of high-quality albums without a single "hook" for rapid labeling.
This expression strategy is essentially a defensive counter-attack in an existential war. While most musicians seek short-term gains by performing roles recognized by the market—the "rebel" or the "genius"—they are engaging in a fake optimal expression, the price of which is the death of subjectivity. Wagner’s refusal to conform builds a biological wall through rigorous quality control, filtering out fast-food consumers and retaining only those who can tolerate ambiguity.
Most intriguing is the oblique referencing of US history in the new album. From the 1929 Great Depression to the metaphors of Andrew Jackson, Wagner avoids weaponized political slogans. Instead, he lets a sense of disquiet linger beneath warm choral arrangements. This "uncertainty" is a direct dissolution of meta-violence—he refuses to provide a standard, masculine-centric, dominant narrative. He returns the power of interpretation to the listener, allowing each individual to complete the puzzle via their own subjective will.
Steady success afforded him time, and time allowed him to manufacture a seductive, indefinable reality in an age where everyone is desperate to define the facts.
