Disabled Bodies as Expensive Consumables in Apple's Vision Pro Ads
This is a textbook case of cultural violence masking structural violence. A disability campaigner dies while filming a promo for Apple Vision Pro, and the coroner rules it 'accidental'. In legal terms, it's an accident; in corporate narrative, it's an act of God.
But we must question the Optimal Expression of this game. What did Apple want? They wanted a story of 'overcoming limitations' to prove their VR headset offers 'infinite possibilities'. In this narrative, Claire Lomas was reduced to a symbol—the 'brave disabled person'. When a human being is instrumentalized as a PR plug-in, they enter a high-risk game where the pricing of that risk is held entirely by the corporation.
The most cynical detail is the mention of 'brave pants'. This unspoken rule—that marginalized people must perform 'bravery' to earn a seat in the public eye—is a form of meta violence. She had to appear confident and adventurous to fit the corporate aesthetic of 'inspiration'. Yet, when she actually performed this dangerous act, the 'risk assessment' became a useless piece of paper in the coroner's eyes.
Apple secured its narrative of 'possibility', while Claire paid with her biological existence. This logic of filling commercial landscapes with individual lives is a modern mutation of the colonization of the Primal Race: your body is defined as a 'special resource', consumed, and finally categorized as an unfortunate coincidence when it breaks.
