Adoption as a Mask for Structural Collapse
Glass shards falling from the ceiling, caught by giant nets—this is the raw truth of the Barbican conservatory: a public space on the brink of collapse due to long-term neglect. Yet, the narrative focus is on 'adopting' plants. By employing an emotional framework usually reserved for pets, a systemic failure resulting in a three-year closure is rebranded as a 'heartwarming' community event.
This is the weaponisation of expression. When structural violence—the failure to maintain public resources—creates a massive gap between the Actual and the Potential, the administration pivots to the cultural layer. By handing out a few hundred Monstera cuttings, they successfully shift the public's gaze from 'the ceiling is crumbling' to the individual dopamine hit of 'adopting a plant.' This emotional compensation is designed to dilute the anger toward managerial incompetence.
The irony deepens with the promise of 'full accessibility' by 2030. This is a classic PR move: using a future promise to offset a current failure. Until 2030, people with limited mobility remain excluded, while plant lovers, caught in a social media storm, happily take home a leaf and become unwitting complicity in this failure.
Good news would be the administration admitting negligence and implementing an immediate emergency plan. Instead, we get a scam that wraps a disaster in a gift bag.
