Rage Needs No Softening: The Return of Riot Grrrl and the Persistence of Existential War

Rage is the first line of defense for the structurally disadvantaged to reclaim subjectivity.

The reunion of Heavens to Betsy is not a nostalgic music show, but a reclamation of power over Expression. In masculine-centric narratives, female rage is labeled as 'hysteria'—a form of Cultural Violence designed to delegitimize resistance and force women into a fake optimal expression of 'gentleness' or 'rationality' just to survive.

Tucker’s insistence that her voice not be 'softened' is critical in the existential game. Once rage is softened, it becomes a consumable 'feminist product,' a sanctioned performance. True Just Expressions must be uncompromising. By screaming about menstruation, abortion, and abuse in the 90s, they seized the cognitive entry points, transforming private pain into political weapons to carve out a space for women in a public sphere monopolized by men.

The most piercing part is Tucker’s realization: in 2026, we still rely on DIY rock shows to discuss our needs instead of possessing the cultural and economic power to ensure full equality. This exposes the stubbornness of Structural Violence—while the narrative has evolved, the distribution of resources and power remains a site of complicity. This 'good news' carries a heavy irony: thirty years later, women are still using the same rage, on the same battlefield, fighting for the same basic right to be recognized as human.
