The Transactional Dance: Who is Whose Pacemaker?

Security is never a gift; it is the pricing power won through existential gaming.

President Lee Jae Myung attempted a romanticized narrative—"You be the peacemaker, I'll be the pacemaker"—to regain agency in the US-ROK alliance. This was a gamble on expression, an attempt to use a specific role to channel South Korea's strategic intent. However, in the existential war of geopolitics, this kind of fake optimal expression—achieving goals by playing a role—is fragile when faced with absolute power asymmetry.

Trump delivered the result Lee wanted via a blunt social media post, but the manner of delivery exposes the structural violence of the relationship: when your security needs become a chip that the other side can flip at will, the outcome is not a victory, but a humiliation. This is the essence of "Korea passing"—under the logic of meta-violence, South Korea's existence is reduced to a line item on a US transactional ledger. Lee got the result, but lost the interpretation rights over that result.

The internal complicity and friction within Seoul are equally telling. The left accepts the substance but regrets the form; the right screams "security disaster." This divide masks a fundamental truth: both sides are merely seeking an optimal expression within a security umbrella defined by Washington. Once that umbrella is viewed through a transactional lens, the surge in support for an independent nuclear deterrent (over 70%) becomes the most honest expression of structural insecurity.

The irony is that Trump's attempt to reduce the American burden is actually accelerating the drive for nuclear independence among allies. When a system maintains its efficiency by arbitrarily stripping others of their security, it accelerates its own dissolution. Lee thought he was setting the pace, only to find he was merely an extra in someone else's script.
