Dynamic Games of the Biological Wall: The Shrew's Survival Optimal
While humans rely on external tools like heated blankets to survive winter, long-clawed shrews opt to rewrite their own hardware. This "reverse Dehnel’s phenomenon" is hardcore: in winter, while their brain case and brain mass shrink, they physically expand their snouts.
This is a textbook case of a biological "Optimal Expression." Under extreme survival pressure, an organism must reallocate resources within a limited energy budget. Shrinking the brain to reduce energy consumption while expanding the nasal cavity to create a vascular network for warming air is a precise, reversible biological game. To reach spring, it must compromise and reconstruct its physical structure.
This phenomenon reinforces the logic of the "Biological Wall" I discussed in Primal Race: biological traits are both limitations and the basis for survival. For the shrew, the Biological Wall is dynamic. It adapts its Phenotype to the environment, turning its body into a weapon against environmental violence. At this scale, there is no "standard form," only the "True Optimal" that allows an individual to survive specific pressures.
Ironically, when humans face structural oppression, we often lean toward playing a role (False Optimal) to survive. The long-clawed shrew, by expanding its bones, reminds us that a true survival strategy should be the physical adjustment of one's own capability boundaries based on environmental pressure.
