摇滚乐的“后台”与被抹除的代价The 'Backstage' of Rock and the Price of Erasure
Frank Beard's death is wrapped in a classic Texas tough-guy narrative: natural innovation, a humble attitude, and a dignified passing surrounded by family. This is a textbook example of cultural violence, beautifying 'humility' to mask the profoundly unjust distribution of resources and interpretative power within the rock industry.
In a masculine-centric band structure like ZZ Top, the drummer is always the one providing the backbeat—the foundation of the rhythm, but never the center of the narrative. Billy Gibbons' eulogy confirms this: Beard was a 'great collaborator,' which in the structural layer defines him as a subordinate. This subordinate status is naturalized within the meta violence of rock music: the male frontman controls the discourse, while the drummer maintains order in the background.
The irony lies in Beard's 'humble' remark at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, calling his life a 'pleasant surprise.' In the existential war of expression, this is a 'fake optimal expression': playing the role of the non-competitive, silent humble man to secure survival within a patriarchal power structure. This complicity bought him a sixty-year career, but the cost was the death of his subjectivity. He became the most durable part of the machine, until the part wore out and he was told to exit with dignity in hospice care.
We shouldn't be moved by this 'dignity.' For a life defined as a 'collaborator,' the gap between Potential and Actual is precisely what this beautified humility fills.
