UK Gas Crisis: The Collapse of the 'Market-Will-Provide' Complicity

Using 'analysis' to mask indecision and 'the market' to mask negligence is structural violence.

The British government's current posture is a textbook study in bureaucratic evasion: cloaking a desperate situation in the language of 'further analysis' while suddenly 'waking up' to a crisis they spent a decade ignoring. This isn't a cognitive shift; it's the bankruptcy of a long-term complicity in the 'market-will-provide' myth.

For years, successive governments defaulted to the belief that the market would ensure energy security. This was a systemic scam. By outsourcing the baseline of survival—heating and energy—to a market driven by short-term profit, the state engaged in structural violence. The result: declining North Sea volumes, skeletal storage, and decaying import terminals, all while ministers played the role of innocent observers. In this narrative, as long as the lights stayed on, it was 'market efficiency'; the moment they flicker, it's a 'global supply chain crisis.'

Now, they discuss intervention and subsidies for companies like Centrica. In game theory, this is a desperate attempt at an optimal expression after the gap between Potential (energy security) and Actual (imminent shortage) has become an abyss. The cruelty lies in the fact that they are still 'describing the menu' rather than placing an order. For millions of households, this professionalized hesitation is a form of cultural violence—using the veneer of 'rational analysis' to mask a total abdication of responsibility for the people's survival.

Approving the Jackdaw gasfield is simply a pivot in the war of narratives. Caught between the 'green transition' optics and the reality of freezing citizens, the government has realized that not letting the populace freeze to death is a more urgent requirement for legitimacy than playing the environmental vanguard. The essence of this crisis is not technical; it is the loss of control over basic survival resources through a decade of ideological complicity.
