Capital's Pricing Power: Lives as Depreciation, Shareholders as Assets
Violence = Potential − Actual。格伦费尔塔(Grenfell Tower)的悲剧在 2017 年没有结束,它只是从 direct 层的火焰,转化成了 structural 层的账单。Arconic 支付给股东的赔偿金比支付给死难者的更多,这个数字差额就是最赤裸的暴力。
Violence = Potential − Actual. The Grenfell Tower tragedy didn't end in 2017; it simply shifted from the direct violence of flames to the structural violence of a balance sheet. The fact that Arconic paid more to its shareholders than to the victims is the most naked expression of this gap.
The most repulsive part isn't the greed, but that this greed is wrapped in the narrative of "ordinary business practices." When a company manufactures death through deception and the legal system allows it to settle its crimes via insurance, the law itself becomes a complicit agent of meta-violence. It signals that as long as your corporate structure is complex enough and your payouts are covered by insurers, killing 72 people is merely a calculable economic loss.
Shareholders' "economic loss" was prioritized over the lives of the deceased. This is not just a resource imbalance, but a struggle for the power to define who the "true victim" is. In the cognitive entry point of capital, a dip in share price is seen as violence (Actual below Potential); whereas the incineration of poor residents is treated as a line item to be haggled over through a lengthy legal battle.
The claim that legal mechanisms "failed" is a scam. The mechanism didn't fail; it functioned perfectly—it precisely protected those who define the rules. To this day, no individual has been charged, proving that under current structural violence, if you sit at the top of the power chain, you can manufacture hell and then comfortably distribute insurance dividends to your shareholders.
