Velvet Shells and the Narcotic Trap of Romantic Love

Toxic masculinity wrapped in supernatural tropes remains a cognitive entry point for masculine-centric narratives.

文章里提到的 “I can fix him” trope 是典型的文化暴力 (cultural violence)。

Give a man fangs and a velvet coat, and the audience will forgive any atrocity. The Guardian's piece attempts to read TV vampires as symbols of 'sexual freedom' and 'subverting heteronormativity,' but this is incredibly naive. The so-called queer glory of Lestat is merely a sequined costume for a traditional masculine-centric narrative. Whether he wears eyeshadow or writhes on stage, he remains the absolute center of power: the predator, the controller, the god who allows others to indulge in the fantasy of 'I can fix him.'

The 'I can fix him' trope mentioned in the article is a classic form of cultural violence. It packages a pathological relationship based on power imbalance as the ultimate romance. When a dangerous immortal kneels at your feet, it is not a surrender of power, but the highest-tier bait used by a predator in the game of existence. This is the weaponisation of the romantic love narrative, conditioning women to believe that toxicity is equivalent to charisma as long as the perpetrator is powerful and beautiful, leading them to feel 'chosen' while their subjectivity is being erased.

As for the 'subversion of Victorian moral panic' or 'challenging gender expectations,' these are merely progressive veneers for meta violence. A male figure with absolute power who can kill at will and define it as 'art' or 'freedom' is still executing a logic of domination, no matter how camp he appears. The danger lies in converting direct violence into an aesthetic pleasure, encouraging the audience to become complicit at the cultural layer in maintaining a fantasy space centered entirely on masculine desire.
