Insuring Fossil Fuel Giants with Taxpayer Money
注意那个词:unprecedented(前所未有的)。
This is a classic case of structural complicity. The UK government is facing a simple math problem: North Sea gas is depleting, infrastructure is aging, and private capital is no longer willing to bet on a dying system. Consequently, the government has deployed a cognitive entry point called “energy security” to transform a commercial risk into a national crisis.
Note the word: “unprecedented.” Energy Minister Michael Shanks uses this to prime the public, framing the proposed “direct financial support” as a heroic rescue mission rather than a clumsy subsidy. In essence, this is using public funds to buy insurance for pipeline operators and storage owners who reaped massive profits during the fossil fuel boom. Capital takes the profit during the ascent and demands the state shoulder the risk during the descent—this is exactly how structural violence operates: privatizing profits and socializing risks.
The irony is that this narrative is packaged as a “responsibility” to millions of households. This is a textbook use of cultural violence—leveraging the working class's fear of a cold winter to legitimize the asset maintenance of the elite. The so-called “pragmatic” approach is simply a green light for controversial fields like Rosebank and Jackdaw. It creates a false reality: that we must cling to the old system to survive, thereby subconsciously delaying the genuine transition to clean energy.
In the Violence Triangle, the Potential is a total energy transition, while the Actual is patching up ruins. The gap between them is the future being swallowed by the complicity of capital and politicians.
