Defining Diana: A Brother's 'Truth' and Another Act of Usurpation
Charles Spencer is publishing a book about his sister, Diana, titled *Swan Song*. His motivation is textbook: tired of the 'misinterpretations' of Diana, he decides to tell the world who she 'really' was, once and for all, from a brother's perspective.
There is a glaring logic of Meta Violence here: thirty years after her death, a woman's subjectivity is still being contested and defined. Spencer claims he wants to 'speak on Diana’s behalf.' In a masculine-centric narrative, even a global icon like Diana must have her 'truth' endorsed, audited, and released by a male relative. This 'protective' narrative is essentially a re-objectification, turning Diana into an artifact of 'charisma and self-doubt' defined by a man.
The timing and marketing—'revelations,' 'the truth,' 'tribute'—are classic examples of Weaponized Expression. By creating a new cognitive entry point, the book seeks to re-anchor Diana's identity in the public sphere. But we must ask: is this 'truth' Diana's own Optimal Expression, or is it Spencer's 'optimal' version constructed to maintain a specific family narrative in the existential war of memory?
When a woman's life is re-edited by a man and labeled as 'the truth,' it reveals the subtlety of Cultural Violence: it masquerades as affectionate remembrance while erasing the possibility of a woman defining herself. Truth should not be announced by a 'representative,' because the moment a representative appears, the person being represented vanishes.
