This is a textbook example of structural violence: a system designed for 'relief' requires the survivor to dismantle their rape experience into data points to assign it a dollar value. This process of total objectification is, in essence, a delayed, cold, institutionalized second rape.
The most nauseating detail is how the abuser, William Fox, used a weaponized narrative of 'saving suicidal boys' to rebrand himself as 'Father of the Year' after being reported. This reveals the logic of meta violence: the masculine-centric narrative controls the right of interpretation. A police officer and scout leader can easily mask his predatory nature by performing the role of the 'authoritative savior,' securing the complicity of society. Even as a doctor, Spinelli remained subconsciously groomed by that 'authoritative male voice,' freezing in the presence of a condescending professor. This is the muscle memory of the biological wall being rewritten by cultural violence.
Spinelli’s attempt to save himself through the 'Compass' framework is a true optimal expression at the individual level, but remains a desperate compromise structurally. He is forced to maintain his psychic integrity within a system that 'dollarizes' trauma. We must ask: why does a civilized society’s method of relief require survivors to relive their objectification under the anesthesia of alcohol? If the gap between Potential (complete healing) and Actual (quantified compensation) is forever bridged by a dehumanizing form, then the legal system itself is a core component of the structural layer of the Violence Triangle.
