Shark Selfies: An Existential Scam Trading Biological Walls for Traffic

When biological instinct is packaged as social currency, expression becomes a predation of life.

These so-called “finfluencers” are engaging in a classic weaponised expression: forcibly converting the survival instincts of wildlife into identity tags that signal “bravery” or “closeness to nature.” In their narrative, sharks are not sovereign beings with their own biological logic, but mere props—backgrounds used to harvest engagement. This is essentially a predation of existence—establishing one's own social status by erasing the subjectivity of the other.

This behavior reveals a pathological logic at the cultural layer: in an algorithm-driven attention economy, authentic natural relationships are “spectacularised.” Influencers adopt a persona of “one who controls danger” to gain short-term traffic. This is a fake optimal expression, as the cost is the surge of stress hormones and immune suppression in the sharks, and the risk of being bitten for the human. There is no just expression in this game, only unilateral invasion.

The irony is that when sharks react based on survival instinct, the narrative often slides back into the old script of “dangerous sharks.” This is how meta-violence operates: first, objectify the other through invasion; then, demonise them through their reaction. It is a miniature replica of the masculine-centric narrative—defining the rules, manufacturing the conflict, and then declaring the other a threat.

Do not mistake this for a simple lack of common sense; it is an expression of power. When you try to prove “coexistence” through a selfie, you are actually declaring your power to define the relationship. True coexistence requires respecting the biological wall, not trying to smash it with a lens.
