Eurovision's 'Decentralization' is Just Aesthetic Arbitrage
Many are debating Sofia versus Burgas, arguing over arena sizes and logistics. This is incredibly naive. In the logic of power, such choices are never about 'capacity', but about the game of narratives. Sofia, as the capital, is the established power center; hosting Eurovision there would be a routine operation of structural violence—resources clustering at the center, with incumbents performing a formality in their comfort zone.
Moving the contest to Burgas is essentially a weaponized aesthetic migration. Burgas has the Black Sea, a tourism industry, and Southern Europe's largest oil refinery. This means BNT and the EBU are attempting to manufacture a 'new reality': rebranding an industrial port city as a cultural landmark to offset the dullness of the capital, while pre-paving the way for the 2032 European Capital of Culture candidacy. It is a classic struggle for cognitive entries, redefining the label of 'Bulgaria' from an 'administrative hub' to a 'seaside destination'.
As for the 'baffled' or 'disappointed' citizens of Sofia, they are subconsciously complicit in this centric narrative. They believe the capital should inherently hold the pricing power. The victory of Burgas is merely a random sampling of power dynamics, or a performance of 'decentralization' for international PR. This so-called 'surprise' is nothing more than aesthetic arbitrage by capital moving between cities.
