As Western forces rolled out and the Taliban returned, brutally circumscribing women's lives through religious dogma, the film finally grants Mir's wife, Shukria, space to speak. The irony is suffocating: she expresses regret over their fourth child, a girl. This isn't a lack of maternal instinct; it is the survival instinct of a biological female facing structural violence. In a society where women are the Primal Race, stripped of all expression, birth is synonymous with colonization.
The airy pledges of Western politicians and Mir's optimism flicker in the same frame, forming a cruel complicity.
