By utilizing the ritual of appearance, they attempt to capture the cognitive entry point of the disaster, framing themselves as "saviors" or "caregivers." If successful, the tragedy is rebranded as "government in action"; if not, as seen with PM Sébastien Lecornu, the official's presence becomes a trigger for rage.
Lecornu’s decision to avoid the general public and speak only to a "selected group of representatives" is a classic mechanism of complicity. Power filters its interlocutors to erase dissonance and manufacture a facade of order. However, the empty chair serves as a precise counter-expression, using a physical symbol to expose the vacuum of actual leadership.
When citizens fight back with boos and empty chairs, it is an existential war over "who defines reality." They reject the curated narrative of "reconstruction" because the gap between Actual relief and Potential safety is still borne by the marginalized.
