The Mimicry of Flies and the Monopoly of Definition

The monopoly of cognitive entry defines some existences as 'filthy', while the truth is they are performing the optimal expression for survival.

This article discusses flies, but I see an existential war over the 'right of definition'. For too long, humanity has used a form of cultural violence to bind the label 'fly' exclusively to faeces, disease, and filth. This is a classic monopoly of cognitive entry: when you reduce a species to a single negative symbol, you strip away its a-priori existence as a complex living being.

The most ironic part is the 'mimicking' mentioned. Many hoverflies must perform the identity of bees to survive. In the biological game, this is their true optimal expression—borrowing the identity symbols of the powerful to mitigate risk. Yet, in human narratives, this is framed as 'deception' or a 'secondary' trait. We worship bees because they are wrapped in a narrative of 'industry', while ignoring the real laborers recycling organic waste in the shadows.

This logic is universal in human society: once a group is defined as 'filthy' or 'low-end', their subjectivity remains absent even if they perform the most critical structural labor. They are forced to 'perform' roles approved by the mainstream just to secure basic survival space. This is a survival strategy in an existential war.

The good news is that this monopolized narrative is being diluted. When we realize 'fly' does not equal 'filth' but encompasses 108 diverse families, the gap between Potential and Actual shrinks. However, we must be wary of turning this cognitive upgrade into another form of 'aesthetic' consumption—giving flies cute names or finding them 'interesting' because they look like Schwarzenegger is still exercising human aesthetic power over the other, rather than truly yielding the right of interpretation.
