Destigmatization as Elite Self-Absolution
Will Poulter’s discourse on 'destigmatization' and 'compassion' for opioid addicts is a textbook example of cultural violence. When a Hollywood actor 'simulates' pain to achieve artistic acclaim and then calls for public kindness, he reinforces a rigid power hierarchy: the strong grant understanding, while the weak wait for absolution.
Addiction is not a psychological glitch where 'self-respect is in the basement'; it is the output of structural violence. The 14-year-olds prescribed Oxycontin and the victims of domestic violence are products of a system that prioritizes profit over people. By shifting the focus to a '50% success rate' and the power of affirmation, the film transforms a systemic plunder into an individualistic tale of resilience. This is a weaponized narrative: using a 'poetic depiction' to sanitize the mechanism that manufactured these addicts in the first place.
It is profoundly cynical that while the Trump administration slashes billions in mental health funding, 'cinematic empathy' is offered as a substitute. This is a form of complicity: Hollywood maintains its 'progressive' brand by consuming the trauma of the marginalized, and the audience feels a sense of moral completion through their tears. The Actual state remains unchanged; the gap between Potential and Actual persists, now hidden behind a veil of pity. In this framework, the addict remains a mere object of the gaze, their suffering priced as artistic value.
