The Mafia of Complicity and the Banned Book
Art Spiegelman's trajectory is a textbook case of an existential war: from an oddball of underground comics to a power couple of the art establishment. Yet, this ascent didn't turn him into a complicit actor; instead, it made him an observer capable of pinpointing meta-violence from within the system.
His comparison of the current GOP to Mafia 'made men' is sharp and precise. In the theory of complicity, once an individual gains advantage by participating in structural violence—such as the 'othering' of others—they enter an irreversible loop of complicity. This loop is no longer based on ideology, but on shared crimes and mutual interests. When an entire party becomes a complicit unit, whistle-blowing becomes impossible because betraying the conspiracy means forfeiting one's value within the structure.
The most ironic structural violence is the banning of 'Maus'. The powers attempt to erase facts by closing the cognitive entry points, but they underestimate the potential of weaponized expression: the bans became the best marketing, forcing more people to realize that the defined 'mice' are actually mirrors of power. When power tries to define who is the cat and who is the mouse, it is announcing its own fear to the world.
The 'counter-revolution' Spiegelman longs for remains distant because the timidity of the Democrats is another form of complicity—a passive one that accepts the status quo in the name of 'decency'. In such an environment, the only true optimal expression for art is to remain, as he does at 78, a self-proclaimed 'idiot,' refusing to be captured by any established narrative of success, and continuing to manufacture truths that make power uncomfortable.
