But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, Violence = Potential − Actual. The gap between the future this 18-year-old could have had and his final state as a body in the wild is the most brutal form of direct violence. Simultaneously, cultural violence occurs when the media objectifies this life into a 'case.' He is reduced to a 'missing British hiker,' and his death becomes a backdrop to validate rescue mechanisms, police cooperation, and family resilience. This narrative erases his specific existence, converting him into public cognitive material about 'risk' and 'rescue.'
The most ironic part is the family's mention that the 'torture of waiting is finally over.' While a life is slowly consumed by structural loneliness and extreme environments, the system provides a post-hoc, procedural consolation. This consolation is a gentle mask for structural violence: it suggests that as long as the protocol was followed, as long as the rescuers deployed, and as long as the police supported, the outcome was 'inevitable.' Under this logic, the disappearance of an individual is rationalized as a victory of nature, while systemic failure is hidden behind the phrasing of 'doing everything possible.'
