While tenants shiver amidst black mould and coal fires, the royal "green" agenda is revealed as a mere cognitive scam.
This is a textbook case of the Violence Triangle. The direct layer is the physical suffering of tenants facing cold and damp; the structural layer is the feudal Duchy system, maximizing profits through tax exemptions while exploiting legal loopholes to evade energy upgrades; the cultural layer is the narrative of the "environmental advocate," which masks the exploitative nature of the landed gentry. This synergy makes the violence invisible and legitimate.
Most repulsive is the mechanism of complicity. The Royals leverage the fear of their tenants—elderly and farmers terrified of rent hikes or eviction—to maintain a silence of complicity. Meanwhile, legal exemptions act as an extension of meta-violence: allowing the powerful to define "historic challenges" to rationalize exploitation as "heritage preservation."
In this game, the Royals have found their true optimal expression: playing the savior in public and the ruthless landlord in private. They don't need to actually improve energy efficiency; they only need to manage the perception of their persona. As long as they control the narrative, they remain the "greenest" aristocrats on earth, even while their tenants live in Dickensian slums.
