The Mask of Civilization and the Honesty of Excrement
London is once again reeking of sewage in the summer of 2026. This is not merely a climate crisis, but a candid exposure of what we call 'civilization.' At its cultural level, civilization is largely the art of the 'invisible': we flush away waste, push poverty and the exploited out of sight, and then declare our world orderly.
Applying the Violence Triangle, this stench is the manifestation of structural violence. The Victorian sewer system was the optimal expression of its time, solving direct plague threats through physical isolation. But as the climate shifts and the system fails to cope with new realities, it becomes a massive, fermenting monument to structural failure. The so-called 'civilized' maintain a monopoly on the definition of 'clean' at the meta level, while structurally relying on a Victorian relic that 'burps' during droughts.
Most ironic is the observation that the public and policymakers are 'squeamish.' This disgust is a form of complicity. As long as we don't discuss 'black water' and continue playing the role of the civilized subject who doesn't need to know where waste goes, we can enjoy the structural dividends. Only when the stench breaks through the biological wall and hits the nostrils do we realize: civilization was simply the act of sealing violence and filth underground, waiting for a hot enough summer to set it free.
