What's more cynical is that this "error" follows a pattern of systemic incompetence, including sending handwritten testimonies to the wrong people. This repetition suggests a form of complicity: the police system, through its clumsy execution, subconsciously protects the legacy of the powerful (like Al Fayed) by neutralizing justice through bureaucratic negligence. They use the mask of "civilized" incompetence to maintain the status quo.
Al Fayed died without ever facing charges. Now, the Met is interviewing "facilitators." But as long as the institution operates under a meta-violence that trivializes survivor safety, these interviews are mere performative justice. The gap between Potential and Actual is not just the lack of a conviction for Fayed, but the fact that the system treats the safety of the Primal Race as a secondary cost that can be swept away by a phrase like "human error."
