In the habitual cognition of most, the human expression toward nature is a classic masculine-centric narrative: we stand on the shore and look down at the creatures in the water. This 'looking down' is not merely a difference in physical height, but a deeply ingrained hierarchy of power—the observer holds the right to define, while the observed is a silent, objectified resource or landscape.
What is interesting about Grogin's action is his conscious abandonment of this privilege. He 'got as low as he could in the mud,' dipping the lens below the waterline. Biologically, this is a reduction of defense; politically, it is a surrender of privilege. When he switched the perspective from 'looking down' to 'face to face,' the bullfrog underwent a qualitative change in the narrative: it shifted from a 'small creature' to something 'powerful, surreal, and mythical.' This proves that facts themselves have no absolute attributes; attributes are manufactured by the perspective—the entry point of expression.
If this shift in perspective could be migrated to social structures, it would possess immense disruptive power. For too long, meta-violence has maintained dominance by defining 'what is normal' and 'who is weak.' Marginalized groups are forever the objectified subjects being looked down upon in the narrative of the powerful. True emancipatory expression is exactly like this photoshoot: demanding the powerful to lie in the mud and acknowledge the subjectivity of the object through an eye-level gaze.
Of course, this remains a gentle observation of nature. The real challenge is this: when a person who has been looked down upon asks you to lie in the mud and look at them as an equal, are you still willing to get your clothes dirty for the sake of a bit of 'mythical feeling'?
