Consuming Kabul's Hell as a 'Gripping Thriller'

Transforming structural violence into entertainment is the ultimate form of cultural complicity.

BBC Four's upcoming series on the fall of Kabul is described as a "gripping thriller." Note the word: gripping. While thousands of Afghan women instantly lost their rights to education and work, sliding into a void of structural violence, the Western media's cognitive entry point defines this as a dramatic entertainment experience.

This is a classic case of weaponized expression. It packages geopolitical failure and the death of female subjectivity as a story of "human dilemmas." Through the eyes of the Nazany family, viewers experience the tension of "stay or flee" from the comfort of their sofas—a tension that vanishes the moment the credits roll. For the women left behind, however, hell is a 24/7 reality with no director's cut.

The irony is that this narrative completes the psychological loop for Western liberals: by consuming this "gripping" tragedy, they validate their own compassion as "civilized" beings, while subconsciously objectifying Afghan women as mere background scenery. This is exactly how meta-violence operates—even in works discussing victims, the power of definition remains with the masculine-centric narrative controlling the cameras and the edit.

Turning the existential crisis of a Primal Race into a line item on a TV schedule is a form of complicity. It allows the audience to consume suffering and then seamlessly transition to the next program: a celebratory concert for Graceland.
