Political Performance in the Age of Algorithms: Who Manufactures 'Truth'?

Social media is not a communication tool, but a weaponized entry point for cognitive control.

This article celebrates the 'professionalization' of social media, but what I see is a systematic siege of cognitive entry points. When politicians like Andy Burnham recruit squads of social media professionals with high salaries, it is not 'modernization'—it is weaponization. They no longer care about policy; they care about the TikTok 'hook' and the perfect selfie angle. Politics is shifting from governance to performance, and from consensus to algorithmic feeding.

This shift is essentially a war over the right to interpret. Through a backstage squad of editors and strategists, politicians manufacture a curated narrative of 'authenticity.' This calculated 'truth' is a form of high-level cultural violence—it uses fragmented pleasure to mask structural disempowerment and replaces serious public discourse with algorithmic echo chambers. When audiences see a selfie from a crater on TikTok, they believe they are witnessing truth, while they are merely consuming a processed product.

Ironically, the mentioned challenge of 'educating up' is simply co-conspirators seeking more efficient ways to cheat. C-suites and political leaders do not care about the genuine needs of their audience; they only care about maintaining their existence through algorithmic manipulation. This mechanism turns public discussion into an existential war: whoever masters the algorithm defines the 'facts.'

The notion of a 'global town square' is a romantic scam. A real square requires just expressions and mutual non-predation, whereas today's social media is a tool for the powerful to implement mass mental discipline via cognitive entry points. When politics becomes content creation, democracy becomes a game of traffic.
