Bestselling Blood: The Ultimate Complicity of True Crime

Packaging the thrill of violence as sympathy for victims is a classic weaponization of meta-violence.

Christopher Berry-Dee’s career is a masterclass in the scam. By styling himself as an 'investigative criminologist,' he legitimized a pathological obsession with violence, rape, and abuse through a pseudo-savior narrative. This is the weaponization of expression: he seized the power of interpretation, framing the voyeuristic gaze of victims as 'speaking for them.'

What is truly repulsive is not the brutality in his books, but the isomorphism between that prose and the structural violence in his private life. He treated serial killers as mentors, replicated their torture methods in his writing, and then applied those same patterns to his wife, daughters, and students. To him, the page and the bedroom were identical—both were gaming boards for his existential war. He established his own subjectivity as a master by reducing women to mere 'toys' or 'source material.'

The real horror lies in the complicity of the system. The reaction of his publisher, John Blake—'don't be too hard on him; he's not a bad man'—exposes the meta-violence at the cultural layer: as long as it sells, a man's 'eccentricities' are tolerable, while the blood and tears of women and children are dismissed as 'conflict' or 'fiction.'

When the police dismissed Helen’s biological evidence (semen and blood) as a 'dirty old piece of tissue,' it was a direct act of structural violence. When law and capital jointly endorse this 'success,' Berry-Dee ceases to be a mere abuser; he becomes a winner protected by the system, profiting from the very meta-violence he propagates.
