Who Defines 'Attack': The Blood Debt of an Orca and Human Retaliation

Defining biological exploration as 'attack' is a cultural shield used to justify retaliatory violence.

This is not merely an act of cruelty; it is a classic case of weaponized cognition. Humans habitually position themselves as the architects of global order. When Toñi and her pod ram boats, the behavior is instantly labeled as an 'attack' or 'destruction.' Once this label is attached, the orcas are transformed from sentient beings into 'aggressors,' and the subsequent shooting is subconsciously rationalized as 'retaliation' or 'defense.'

This is exactly how Galtung's Violence Triangle operates: the cultural layer first manufactures a narrative that defines biological play or hunting practice as hostile. This narrative then shields the structural violence—the indifference toward a population of only 30 to 40 individuals on the brink of extinction. As long as they are labeled 'destructors,' their right to exist is deprioritized. Finally, this logic manifests as direct violence: pellets lodged in a dorsal fin.

The irony lies in the condescending logic of human 'protection': the belief that animals should exist only insofar as they do not interfere with human economic activity (shipping). The shooting of Toñi is a violent assertion of a colonial pricing power—any expression that challenges the human 'order,' regardless of its biological motive, must pay a price in blood.

This is not a failure of 'interaction'; it is a unilateral colonial bullying. Humans have not only occupied the ocean but have monopolized the interpretation of 'who is attacking whom.'
