Cambridge appointing him as the 'youngest ever Black professor' was never a pure academic recognition; it was a weaponised expression. The university needed a visible, breakthrough 'Black identity' to decorate its diversity narrative and offset its deep-seated elitism. In this narrative, Arday was not an independent scholar, but a selected symbol.
Once plagiarism claims surfaced, the identity halo that once protected him instantly became a weapon. For the institution, purging a Black professor for academic misconduct provides a twisted sense of 'justice'—a chance to signal that they are 'equally strict' with Black academics. This is a masquerade of meta-violence; it binds a person's subjectivity entirely to a racial label, stripping them of any maneuvering space in the game of power.
The 'relentless accusations' Arday mentioned in his resignation are the side effects of this identity politics. When one is pushed through the cognitive entry of 'youngest Black professor,' every action ceases to be individual and becomes representative of an entire race. This high-pressure environment of expression denied him any chance for a true optimal expression, forcing him into the fake optimal expression of playing the 'successful Black elite' until he was hollowed out. In the end, when the performance failed, he found that outside of the label used and discarded by the system, he had no place left to exist in the public space.
