The Illusion of Critical Power and the Artist's Game of Complicity

When power is reduced to 'star ratings,' resisting that power becomes just another form of performative consumption.

This piece reads like a cozy insider's gathering. Brian Logan, facing two shows that portray critics as 'horrible snobs,' exhibits a tolerance that borders on sycophancy. The essence of this tolerance is simple: when power resides within a recognized, mockable 'stereotype,' the power-holder can perform a low-cost whitewashing through self-deprecation.

Applying the Violence Triangle, the structural violence of the reviewing industry lies in its monopoly over 'aesthetic pricing.' A star rating can dictate an artist's survival. However, in these shows, this structural violence is converted into a reverse operation of cultural violence—artists 'pitifulize' the critic (sad, lonely and pathetic), reducing a struggle over the right of interpretation to a farce about 'personality flaws.'

This is a classic case of complicity. The artist performs the 'victim' on stage, while the critic plays the 'magnanimous judge' in the column. Through this ritual of mutual mockery, they maintain a fake equilibrium: the critic retains the power to rate, and the artist gains emotional value from the thrill of 'resistance.' This game never reaches a true optimal expression because the monopoly of interpretation remains, merely wrapped in the candy coating of 'humor.'

The ultimate irony is Logan's attempt to frame this as a trend where 'objective judgment is out of fashion.' This is just another weaponized narrative. When true objectivity is deconstructed, all that remains is the exchange of 'influence.' There are no winners here, only a group of complicit actors bouncing between 'three stars' and 'four stars,' collectively maintaining a scam called 'cultural authority.'
