The Physical Shell of AI and the Fortifications of Power
Most people treat AI as a string of code in the cloud, but the warning from Police Scotland tears through this scam: AI is not some ethereal 'intelligence'; it is a heavy, brutal physical presence. It is hundreds of diesel generators, a power-hungry monster consuming 1.5 times a nation's peak demand, and industrial noise dumped directly next to hospices and hospitals. This is structural violence in its purest form—externalizing environmental and health costs onto the most powerless while concentrating the compute dividends in boardrooms in Silicon Valley and London.
It is profoundly ironic that the police here are acting not as 'peacekeepers' but as 'security consultants' for Big Tech. By warning developers to implement 'robust security' to prevent 'unplanned incursions,' the state apparatus is pre-emptively defining the defense of survival rights as 'disruption.' This is a clear act of complicity, building fortifications for capital's physical expansion. In this calculus, the future of a child with leukemia is priced at zero compared to the 'National AI Strategy.'
As the UCL professor noted, datacenters are the only physical manifestation of AI. While algorithms mask the erosion of human cognition through cultural narratives of 'efficiency' and 'progress,' people have finally found something they can touch, surround, and attack. This is no longer a philosophical debate about whether AI will replace humans; it is an existential war over land, electricity, and the right to breathe. When the power of interpretation is monopolized by weaponized terms like 'safety standards' and 'planning regulations,' physical resistance becomes the only way for the marginalized to reclaim their existence.
