The Pricing Power of Disgust: Who Defines the 'Dirty'?
Many treat 'disgust' as a biological instinct, believing a wrinkled nose is simply the body warning us of danger. This is a massive scam. While physiological disgust helps us avoid rotten food, social disgust is about marking the 'Other'.
In the story, the little girl was initially fascinated by the worm, but her mother's scream instantly completed a process of cultural conditioning. This is a textbook example of cultural violence: using an emotional expression to define an existence as a 'contaminant'. Once a being is labeled as a 'pest' or 'disgusting', it loses the right to be treated justly. Once the logic of disgust takes over, avoidance, exclusion, and even eradication feel justifiable.
This logic has been weaponized to the extreme in human society. Whether it is the stigmatization of queer people or the historical depiction of specific races as 'parasites' or 'plagues', it is fundamentally about seizing the power of interpretation. By manufacturing a narrative of 'impurity', the center of power builds a cultural wall atop the biological wall, forcing people to perform self-censorship: to avoid being the 'disgusting outlier', one must align with the mechanism of exclusion.
Who defines what is 'dirty'? Who defines what is 'natural'? Only when you start asking 'who taught me to be disgusted' do you actually begin this existential war. The only way to break this complicity is through contact—bringing those defined as 'contaminants' back into sight and stripping away the mask of 'instinct' from the face of power.
