The 'Hero' Narrative of the CEO Assassination and the Shield of Structural Violence

When an individual uses direct violence to fight structural violence, they become the system's perfect shield.

Luigi Mangione's guilty plea pushes this farce into the judicial process, but the real game is played outside the courtroom. The absurdity here is that an individual destroyed by the healthcare system attempted to combat a vast, invisible structural violence—composed of algorithms and insurance policies—through the extreme expression of a 3D-printed gun. Consequently, he became a fetishized idol for the 'Mangionistas' on social media, a weaponized narrative that is inherently dangerous.

The logic of this 'folk hero' narrative is simplistic: the system is evil $\rightarrow$ killing the system's agent $\rightarrow$ justice. This is a cognitive trap. Assassinating a CEO does not change UnitedHealthcare's profit model, nor does it erase the suffering of thousands of denied claimants. This direct violence failed to reduce the gap between Potential and Actual; instead, it provided the system with a perfect shield. By framing Mangione as a 'cold-blooded assassin' or a 'psychopath,' the system shifts the discourse from 'structural exploitation of healthcare' to 'legal punishment of violent crime.'

Most ironic are the online 'fans' engaging in a low-cost, performative justice. They consume Mangione's rebellion without facing actual systemic pressure. Meanwhile, federal prosecutor McDonald's claim that 'violence is not a legitimate instrument to promote any social message' is logically correct but arrogant within the context of meta-violence. When a person is pushed to a broken back and a destroyed life with no recourse, the system has already inflicted long-term, silent violence. Now, the system holds up a law book to tell the victim: your method of resistance is illegal.

Mangione has pleaded guilty, but the system that kills thousands remains operational. The outcome of this war is not about whether he receives life imprisonment, but whether we still mistake this individual burst of violence for the beginning of structural change.
