Two derailments in two days. To most, this is an 'unfortunate coincidence' or a 'technical glitch.' But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this is textbook structural violence. When infrastructure maintenance is diluted by capital logic or administrative efficiency, the gap between Potential (safe commuting) and Actual (the reality of derailment) is the violence exerted upon passengers.
The most insidious part of this violence is its diffuseness. It doesn't have a visible perpetrator like a murder; it is masked as an 'incident' or a 'failure.' Within this narrative, passengers become passive objects of risk, while operators use PR phrases like 'more details soon' to convert structural collapse into case-by-case management.
We are conditioned to be outraged by direct violence, but we grow accustomed to the slow rot of structural violence. When derailments begin to show a 'regularity' in frequency, they cease to be accidents and become a sanctioned status quo. In this complicity, passengers pay fares, operators deliver risk, and regulators check 'resolved' on a report.
The true horror is not the second of the derailment, but the fact that we can read two similar news snippets in the same week with such eerie calm.
