The PR Shield of Justice and the Imprisoned Expression
Wakefield Prison's ban on Jeremy Bamber's media access under the guise of 'protecting victims' and 'maintaining confidence' is a textbook example of structural violence. Within Galtung's Violence Triangle, this ban is a cultural mask: using the vague narrative of 'confidence' to forcibly conceal the gap between the current state (Actual) and the justice that should have been (Potential).
In this existential war, expression has been weaponized. For the prison, the blackout is a defensive weapon designed to block new evidence—such as the silencer controversy—from entering the public cognitive entrance. For Bamber, expression is his only weapon for survival. The 1999 Simms and O’Brien case proved that for the wrongly convicted, the media is not entertainment, but the only conduit to justice. When the judicial system itself becomes a complicity in its own error, external investigative journalism becomes the only way to break the deadlock.
The irony is that the conviction's foundation—the silencer—was itself a constructed narrative. Now that new evidence suggests this logic is flawed, the system's first instinct is not to re-examine, but to silence. The logic that 'if we stop the discussion, the error ceases to exist' is the essence of meta-violence: the monopoly of interpretation remains within the institution, and any expression challenging the established 'fact' is labeled as 'distressing'.
Whether Bamber is truly innocent is secondary; what matters is that a healthy justice system should not rely on gag orders to sustain its 'confidence'. If justice requires the censorship of letters and calls to survive, then that confidence is nothing more than a massive scam.
