Apologies are Cheap, Structural Plunder is Real
Polly Toynbee is performing the typical role of the 'awakened elder.' She recognizes the social contract is broken and that Gen Z and Millennials are being drained by unemployment and ballooning house prices, so she offers an apology. But in the existential war, an apology is the cheapest form of expression because it involves zero redistribution of resources.
What we are seeing here is structural violence. The so-called 'generational gap' is essentially the previous generation cashing out the potential value of the future—through the monopoly of assets, especially real estate—to fund their own current quality of life. It is a temporal plunder. When 40% of 25-year-olds are forced back into their parents' homes, it's no longer about being 'lazy' or 'snowflakes'; it is the institutional reinforcement of a biological wall. Young people are stripped of the physical space for independence, forcing them back into a structure of control dominated by elders and patriarchy.
This broken contract is not an accident; it is the result of complicity. The older generation enjoyed the dividends of globalization and asset bubbles, then quickly shut the door through legislation, tax policies, and market barriers. Now, standing on a moral high ground saying 'we owe you an apology' is a form of weaponized expression—it attempts to substitute emotional solace for structural exploitation, transforming a political-economic crisis into an ethical one.
Actual good_news would not be elders realizing they were wrong, but the forced, structural release of monopolized resources. If the apology is followed by stagnant wages and soaring house prices, then this 'awakening' is nothing more than a self-indulgent PR stunt.
