The Secret Attic and the Deferred Expression
A secret room hidden behind a bookcase, sketches and paintings gathering dust for decades—this is romantic in literary narratives, but in the perspective of existential war, it is a classic case of the burial of subjectivity.
Iris Murdoch painted her self-portrait and female nudes at 21, an expression of her realization of being bisexual and her radical political explorations. Yet, these works remained locked in an "inner sanctum" for decades. We must ask: why did such a powerful intellectual subject feel the need to physically isolate her most primal desires and visual expressions?
In mid-20th century Oxford, even for a genius woman, the space for expression was quantitative and monitored. As she entered the mainstream literary scene and became a Booker Prize winner, her optimal expression inevitably underwent social filtering. Those female nudes with "sexual frisson" and her desperate explorations of surrealism likely did not fit the social contract of a "serious author" or a "proper wife" at the time. Consequently, she maintained her true optimal expression internally by creating a physical secret room, while performing a socialized expression externally. This split is a common complicity strategy for structural underdogs surviving within the masculine-centric narrative: give the world the role it wants to see, and hide the authentic self behind the bookshelf.
Now, these works are unearthed by Dr Leeson and defined as "revealing a new aspect." But this is essentially a deferred confirmation. When a person's subjectivity must be maintained through "hiding" during their lifetime, the victory of this expression carries a tragic tone of compensation. We are not celebrating the discovery of paintings, but the fact that the authentic, undisciplined Iris Murdoch has finally reclaimed her right of interpretation in the 21st century.
