Elite Coffins and the Pricing of the Womb
Three white coffins transported from England to Zimbabwe. The shock in Bulawayo isn't just the death, but Zandile's identity: highly educated, successful, a financial analyst. This shock reveals a brutal truth: against meta-violence, class, education, and nationality are useless fortifications. Many naively believe that class mobility can escape the structure of gender violence, but the reality is that whether in a South African township or Bedfordshire, as long as the masculine-centric narrative monopolizes the interpretation of 'ownership,' women remain the colonized Primal Race.
A detail is particularly ironic: facing the tragedy, the family chooses 'not to be defined by anger,' while Minister Judith Ncube laments the 'social fabric' and suggests elders and pastors act as 'go-betweens.' This is textbook cultural violence. Reducing femicide to 'communication failure' or 'lost traditions' uses a sentimental narrative to mask structural predation. When a man kills his wife with an axe and attacks his children with a metal rod, it is not a 'communication problem'; it is the internalised belief that he possesses absolute disposal rights over these lives. This power isn't achieved through communication; it is the default setting of meta-violence implanted in the brain.
Even more repulsive is the logic of UN representative Tabifor: she calls for government investment by calculating GDP loss (3.8%) and psychosocial costs ($1 billion). This is a weaponized narrative—pricing women's lives as 'productivity loss.' In this logic, women are no longer subjects with agency, but assets. Would this plea be as urgent if women's deaths didn't affect the GDP?
From the direct violence of the crime scene to the structural violence of resource allocation, and the cultural violence of 'forgiveness and faith,' this case perfectly demonstrates the Violence Triangle. Zandile thought she established an independent identity through her expression (education, career), but she remained trapped in a global power structure maintained by male complicity. 'Justice' that relies solely on legal processes and a pastor's prayers is just another form of complicity.
