Ecological Colonialism Masked by 'Wonder'

Narratives that objectify biological life as 'spectacle' are extensions of meta-violence.

The Guardian's annual competition is essentially a power game over the 'cognitive entry point.' It reduces invertebrates—beings existing entirely outside the human biological wall—into a 'mindblowing' spectacle. When editors and reporters debate who should 'come top,' they are exercising the power of interpretation: defining what is 'incredible,' and thus deciding which lives deserve public attention and which can remain erased by structural violence.

This narrative is dangerous because it transforms ecological conservation into a form of 'aesthetic competition.' In the logic of meta-violence, if a species isn't 'stunning' enough, its cultural presence shrinks to zero, leading to further deprivation of structural resources, such as funding and legislative priority. This is isomorphic to the logic of sexualizing the female body as a 'resource' or 'product': only objects that satisfy the aesthetic or curiosity of the observer (typically the power-holder in a masculine-centric narrative) gain temporary visibility.

Do not be deceived by this gentle, popular-science veneer. If the prerequisite for protecting a species is that it must be 'mindblowing,' it remains a colonization of the 'right to define.' A Just Expression would be to acknowledge the inherent value of these lives, rather than turning them into a voting option for human social currency. This so-called 'annual election' is merely a mild rehearsal of cultural violence played out in the natural world.
