Festival Lists: Consuming Objects within Curated 'Taboos'

Juxtaposing BDSM with ballet is a cultural violence scam, transforming power asymmetry into aesthetic consumption.

最值得追问的是《I Want Your Sex》。

A typical film festival 'must-see' list is essentially a performance of power over cognitive entry points. Look at the arrangement: the literary warmth of Borges, the physical tension of ballet, and the 'kink-positive' nature of BDSM. This juxtaposition is cunning; it attempts to dissolve structural violence into artistic taste by converting power dynamics into aesthetic preferences.

'I Want Your Sex' is particularly telling. Described as 'transgressive' and 'kink-positive,' featuring an 'imperious dominatrix' and a 'bedazzled assistant,' BDSM is weaponized here as a form of avant-garde identity expression. But let's call this what it is: a scam. Without a dissection of the real complicity within power structures, 'positivity' is merely a decorative veil for the masculine-centric logic of dominance and submission.

Meanwhile, 'Pretty Babies' exposes a more direct structural violence: the symbiosis between the sex industry and show business. Two girls seek gold in LA and end up as fuel for the industry. The irony is that this brutal reality and the aforementioned 'BDSM aesthetic' occupy the same list. One is raw colonization; the other is a sophisticated performance. When the audience consumes both narratives at one festival, they become complicit in a massive cultural violence—unifying the deprivation and domination of the female body into a 'visual spectacle.'

This list doesn't define cinema; it defines 'high-class taboos.' It ignores how power actually flows, caring only if that flow is 'viscerally intense' or 'sensual.'
