When Meta claims China leads in open-source, it is leveraging an 'external threat' to lure users into its own open-weight scheme. It is merely swapping 'dependency on a company' for 'dependency on a technical standard.'
True good_news is not 'a tycoon decided to share,' but the portability of digital infrastructure. If your digital memory cannot migrate freely between models, you remain a penned-in tenant, regardless of whether the weights are open.
