Zuckerberg's 'Open Source': A Masquerade of Lease Power

When power claims the future is 'for everyone,' it is usually redefining the terms of the lease.

真正的 good_news 不应该是“某个大佬决定分享”,而应该是数字基础设施的 portability(可携带性)。

Zuckerberg's 6,500-word essay and open-weight model are attempts to establish a narrative of 'generosity' at the cognitive entry point of AI. Do not be fooled by this 'for-everyone' posture. In the game of power, there are no selfless gifts, only higher-level complicity. Meta is pushing open-source now not out of conscience, but because OpenAI and Google already hold the pricing power in the closed-model rental market. When you rent in someone else's territory, the landlord can evict you or change the lease at midnight. Meta's strategy is simple: if I cannot be the biggest landlord, I will undermine the monopoly by providing the 'blueprints' for free.

This is essentially a war over the 'off-switch.' Closed-models are a form of structural violence—they turn intelligence into a leased service where users pay but lack subjectivity; your digital existence is locked in another's server. Open-weight models offer an escape route disguised as 'freedom.' But as the Mozilla CTO noted, if you entrust your private memories and health data to an agent whose architecture is still defined by Meta, you are still writing your diary in their house. This 'private mode' is a weaponized expression: using technical promises to mask structural dependency.

Most ironic is how this 'openness' becomes a tool for geopolitical complicity. Washington can shut down Anthropic instantly, while Chinese models build ecosystems through open weights. When Meta claims China leads in open-source, it is leveraging an 'external threat' to lure users into its own open-weight scheme. It is merely swapping 'dependency on a company' for 'dependency on a technical standard.'

True good_news is not 'a tycoon decided to share,' but the portability of digital infrastructure. If your digital memory cannot migrate freely between models, you remain a penned-in tenant, regardless of whether the weights are open. Any 'for everyone' narrative that fails to translate into individual ownership of one's digital existence is just another scam for the cognitive entry point.
