From 'Woke 1' to Political Betrayal: The Performative Radicalism of Progressives
AOC and Mamdani have rebranded their pandemic-era support for 'Defund the Police' as 'Woke 1,' dismissing it as a mere 'mood' or 'experiment.' This narrative shift is insidious: it reduces a serious political demand regarding structural violence to a collective 'adolescent impulse' or an 'aesthetic error.'
In the existential war, these politicians precisely captured the 'vibe' of the era, using it as a cognitive entry point to rapidly accumulate political capital and secure seats of power. However, once these radical expressions stopped polling well and ceased to serve their survival within the existing power structure, they immediately initiated a 'self-audit,' redefining their former comrades and organizers as 'crazy.'
This is essentially a struggle over the power of interpretation. They used the romantic narratives of the left as a springboard, and upon gaining power, quickly entered into complicity with meta violence. They no longer seek to dismantle the police apparatus—a machine of structural violence—but choose instead to become its maintainers, using the weaponized concept of 'public safety' to mask its essence: a violent jobs program designed to protect private property and maintain class dominance.
The most brutal part is that the 'pivot' for a politician is low-cost, while the persistence of a grassroots organizer is high-cost. When AOC and others label 'Defund' as 'crazy,' they are effectively providing cultural legitimacy for right-wing surveillance, arrests, and violence. They have redefined the path to liberation as a ticket to a psychiatric ward.
