Eurovision's Mask of Peace and the Art of Political Whitewashing
The EBU's latest 'rule upgrade' is a textbook case of weaponised expression. By embedding 'armed conflict' and 'sensitive geopolitical situations' into the barring criteria, they claim to build a safe and welcoming environment. In reality, they are using a pseudo-just structural logic to patch up previous complicity.
Looking at the recent games, Israel's participation sparked massive boycotts. The EBU's timing in introducing these rules is a calculated attempt to dilute specific political accountability through 'procedural justice.' When violence is abstracted into a 'sensitive situation,' the actual victims—those stripped of their existence in Gaza and the West Bank—disappear from the narrative. This is cultural violence: redefining reality to turn a bloody conflict into an administrative issue solvable by an 'independent security body.'
Most ironic is how the EBU offsets the risks of declining viewership and financial blows through expansion (e.g., adding Canada and venturing into Asia). In their cognitive entry point, 'spirit and integrity' are far less valuable than market share. This expansion follows the logic of complicity: as long as the massive commercial machine keeps running, any political cost can be neutralized by editing the rulebook.
As for raising the minimum age to 18, it's merely a facade of 'adult responsibility' to build a biological wall against legal risks. This contest has never been about music; it has always been about who holds the power to define 'civilization' and 'peace.'
